Gifts and Talents...

Dear Family and Friends!

First of all, I think I have had more illness on my mission than anyone should have in their entire life! But that's ok. Let's hope 2016 is a illness free year to make up for 2015....

Monday - we were going to go to a castle....but the weather was HORRIBLE. It was like a blizzard of rain. A rainstorm? But like...so windy and awful. So we ended up staying in our flat, writing letters, and taking a big nap. Sometimes as a missionary you forget how exhausted you are all the time cause it feels normal, but taking that nap reminded me what it was like to not be tired anymore, cause when I woke up I felt awake and alert and ready to go! It was wonderful. Pday was just lovely. We then trudged through mud and rain and wind to have family home evening and dinner with Lynn and her new husband Ben! It was SO lovely to spend time with them, and to listen to and learn from Ben's conversion story, and to just share the gospel with them. I love family home evening and it was so lovely to do that with them!

Tuesday - we had district meeting with the zone leaders (crazy pictures to come) which was WONDERFUL! Our zone leaders are amazing, and I absolutely love my district. I learned a lot from them, and it was absolutely lovely. We then stopped by a bunch of people, and invited them to our carol service that is coming up, and had a lovely dinner with the Pettersons! They share the gospel so much and are such a lovely family.

Wednesday - so on Wednesday, Sister Gaffney caught a sickness bug...and we were stuck inside the flat as she was so nauseous and such....so I studied a LOT (I read so many scriptures and talks) and called a lot of people, and just took care of her. The lovely owl rice bags have been in use this week :) sister Gaffney loves hers and I LOVE mine, thank you mom ️

Thursday - Sister Gaffney still wasn't very well in the morning, but as the day progressed she felt better and we were able to go out and see the Holcombes, and teach Paul and he went to the priesthood session of stake conference that night which was WONDERFUL! We were also able to see Deb and share the new Christmas video and website with her, which was lovely.

Friday - so I caught that sickness bug that Sister Gaffney had....so she studied a lot this day and called people. I am sick and tired of being sick and tired, so I am praying that because I caught so many things this year, that my immune system can be strengthened and that I will be healthy and strong all next year! I did feel way better by the time night came, so that was good...

Saturday - we had the ward Christmas party, I got attacked by children and fake snow (video to follow), and we were able to spend some time with the ward and support them! We then went to a TON of people's houses and got a lot of return appointments for this upcoming week, so that should be wonderful for next week! We found a couple families to teach which I am SUPER excited about, and all in all it was a wonderful day! We also had stake conference that night, and got to see President and Sister Leppard which was lovely.

Sunday - we had stake conference which was AMAZING! I learned so much from it, and it was just fabulous. We also got to talk to a lot of people and had a wonderful sabbath day, ending it off with dinner at the riders who I love to bits! I love Sunday's and this one was fabulous :)

My thought for this week comes from our stake conference. We were taught about gifts and talents we have, and we were asked the question "do you let the potential of what you can become shape what you do?"
And I just thought about the potential I have, and if I am letting it shape what I do and who I become. I need to use my talents and abilities and gifts that God has given me to become better, and to shape who I am and what I do!

My challenge is to pick a talent you have, or to pick something you'd like to learn how to do, and work on improving at that thing this week. If it is sewing, computer programming, piano, ANYTHING, just pick it and work on it and it will bless your lives and the lives of those around you!

Christmas is coming!

Hello Family and Friends!

Monday - so we emailed, and we went to town! We got to see all the Christmas lights and it is BEAUTIFUL. I love Christmas :) We then went to the Bernards for dinner...and then went to go try and teach, but the lady we went to visit must not have been in..we had some fun in the rain though! We were blown around by the wind and it was a bit crazy, but such is missionary life :) 

Tuesday - We went to see the Morgans who are HILARIOUS, and visited some other people, and then went and had dinner with the Bettridges and Rosemary who are just so lovely :) I love this ward so much, and just Rhiwbina in general. I love this area. We were able to talk to Paul...he is rocking the Book of Mormon. He was in the end of 2 Nephi when we called him, and he just loves it! Which I love. 

Wednesday - we tried to see one of our new investigators, but when we stopped by she was VERY ill. The weather has started to get worse and now everyone is getting ill! Which makes it hard to visit people, but its ok. We then had lunch with the Parry's, who are amazing. Sister Parry is making like..hundreds of Christmas cards by HAND and she showed them to us, and just wow. They are the most creative people. They do tapestries, painting, cross stitch, cards, and pretty much just everything....wow. We then got to go teaching with the COOLEST YSA EVER! Lauren is amazing, and is planning on a mission so she came teaching with us when we went to see dear old John, and she is wonderful! She answered a question that sister Gaffney and I weren't even sure how to answer, and it was such a good experience. Go teaching with the missionaries if you can, cause it is the BEST. They appreciate it so much. We then visited quite a few more people throughout the day, and then had dinner with the Liassides. They are just the sweetest family. And their kids are HILARIOUS. 

Thursday - AMERICAN THANKSGIVING. So they don't celebrate thanksgiving at all over here, so I didn't get to have Canadian thanksgiving, but some American members in the ward invited us for American thanksgiving to make up for it, so we did celebrate it! Before then we were helping Rosemary with her Faith project, I will take a picture of it next week but she is doing AWESOME and picking out pictures and quotes that she loves, and making an art project out of it. Also, we found a guitar in her house (it is missing 2 strings) but I managed to fix one of the strings kind of and play a song for her, which I think she liked. It surprisingly didn't sound so bad once it was tuned. We then had thanksgiving at the Riders, and it was SO GOOD! We also talked about what everyone is grateful for this year, and I am so grateful that I have the support that I have on my mission. I really appreciate it so much, I get so much love from people at home, and people here, and it just makes being a missionary a bit easier sometimes, because after being outside in the pouring rain and wind, and having doors slammed in our faces....having love and support makes us realize how worth it it is. So thank you

Friday - We had district meeting with President and Sister Leppard! They are absolutely amazing :) I love them to bits. We learned so much about how to improve as missionaries, and also how to use the new Christmas video in missionary work! I am SO EXCITED FOR CHRISTMAS! And for the Christmas video and getting to share it and AH. I just love it. I love being a missionary. I think it is probably the best thing EVER. We also helped decorate for a baby shower (pictures to come), and played basketball with our investigator, Paul (yes. I actually played basketball #miracle). 

Saturday - we did weekly planning, and visited a lovely less active lady and her son, and had a full English breakfast for lunch there, which I have never had before...so that was a new experience! But it was delicious. And we were able to share a lot from the scriptures with them and they loved it :) MIRACLES! 

Sunday - ok. This was such a spiritually exhausting day. So we had church, which was amazing, and then we were invited to come with our recent convert as she got her patriarchal blessing. THAT was such a privilege, and wow. I feel so blessed to have been there. She is amazing. And it was such a wonderful experience. We then had a sister session of stake conference (which I've never had before, but I loved it!) and we learned SO MUCH. I was exhausted at the end of the day, I felt like I had just been drained of all energy, but it was amazing! 

So my spiritual thought and challenge..is just more of a challenge this week. There is a new Christmas video the church has put out and it is AMAZING. So watch it, feel the spirit, and then share it with someone or on social media or something! IT IS AMAZING! And Christmas is coming :)

A raw but precious jewel...

Dear Family and Friends,

So this week has been good but hard at the same time. I think I am cursed to be ill once a transfer or something...but this time I gave my illness to my comp as well  BUT don't worry, I am all better now! And my comp is as well. It was just a couple days flu/cold thing. Anyways... 

Monday - we went to Costco! That was weird...but fun. It felt like I was back home cause Costco feels the same no matter where you go! It was weird. Sister Webb took us and we bought a GIANT box of gluten free brownie stuff because..I do love gluten free things! And then we went grocery shopping...and just chilled with sister Webb and her friend Laura (who was sister Gaffney's EFY counselor...weird...) but it's was really fun!!! That night we taught Paul, who is just AWESOME! He just loves the gospel. And I love that. We also saw Lisa!!! And we taught her as well and are going to see her soon :) 

Tuesday was #miracleday  - So we taught Wendy in the morning, and also Lisa (the other one), and also visited Rosemary....the poor thing had a fall so we helped her out with hoovering and some other things, and just tried to uplift her and make her happy. We visited with Deb as well, and then a lovely lady named Joan who is just so sweet. We were able to see SO many people and we didn't even have a bike for sister Gaffney yet so we were walking...it was a miracle we were able to see all those people! But it was wonderful :) we also had a broadcasted fireside that night all about ward council, with Elder Ballard (so yes, it was amazing). 

Wednesday, we had zone meeting!! There were a LOT of new people in the zone, which is cool but it was such a good meeting. We learned a lot about faith, and also talked about the new Christmas video the church is going to put out soon! I am SO excited for that. I love Christmas and the spirit it brings :) I got the play the organ for zone meeting as well so that was lovely. I LOVE playing the organ now. I think I am just growing to love it more and more. We then traveled to Fairwater and walked quite a distance to see Lisa....but she forgot we were coming and was in town :( but it's ok. We talked to lots of people and had some good comp bonding/walking in a windstorm/rainstorm time.) We then had volleyball that night, Paul came and our new dear friend Lauren who is planning on going on a mission soon (SO FUN!) and we also had ward coordination! It was a very good day, although tiring. 

So on Thursday we had Sister Gaffney's bike from the mission home, and we had to fix it up so we did that...and I was feeling quite ill....quite quite ill....as was Sister Gaffney. Turns out we both had this awful cold/flu thing (we don't really know what it was. But it was unpleasant) so we rested a bit, and then went to the Holcombe's, and then to this interfaith meeting our church was holding at the chapel. It was SO cool, and we met a ton of people from different faiths and just got to share a bit about what missionaries from our church do, and it was amazing! I loved it. 

Friday, we went out in the morning with Sister Liassides to try and visit a few people....and none of them were home :( but we got to spend some time with her which was good as well. When we came home...I had so much mail! I feel so blessed :) I had a letter from France, a postcard from Romania, and a package from Canada...wow! Thank you friends and family for sending me love and support :) it really brightened my day as we were both feeling quite ill, so thank you! We then went by to visit Marilyn...who wasn't in..but we left a lovely note and will hopefully see her next week! That night we had games night at the chapel. And there were LOTS of people there! It was crazy! As sister Gaffney and I weren't feeling quite well, we didn't play basketball, but just played some cards and watched the basketball. 

Saturday was service day!!! We got to go with the Elders and some other members to the Bishops house and paint quite a few walls and doors and such...and it was so fun! I love service :) and I love painting especially. We did that and then bishops family made us a lovely lunch. We were also able to see Vicki and her family! She has the sweetest kids, and we had some curry (which was apparently Elder Pillays recipe ) but it was very good, and then we finally got her to call the patriarch about getting her blessing, which is going to be AMAZING! We are so excited about that :) 

Sunday we had church! Church was amazing, and I definitely felt that it was all meant for me.... Our stake president and his wife spoke, and they were both just amazing! She talked all about her studies about Moses...and wow. I want to work on my studies to apply them more to my life than I have been. Our stake president talked about the 6 's that president Hinckley spoke about, and applied all of them specifically to the Sabbath day and how we can use them to make our Sunday more focused on God. It was a really thought provoking talk. We then finished our weekly planning and had dinner at the Riders! OH! We are having thanksgiving dinner this Thursday at the Riders, Brother Rider is American, and since I didn't get my Canadian Thanksgiving we are invited! So I will get thanksgiving this week - it may be late, but that's ok! 

My spiritual thought this week and challenge is from a talk by Elder Oaks, called "Gospel Teaching." In it he quoted a book called 'Tuesday's with Morrie' (I don't know if you've read it, but it's good from what I remember) 

“Have you ever really had a teacher? One who saw you as a raw but precious thing, a jewel that, with wisdom, could be polished to a proud shine? If you are lucky enough to find your way to such teachers, you will always find your way back.”

Teachers are really SO important. They change our lives in so many ways and influence us in careers, political views, and all sorts of things. Now...we have lots of different kinds of teachers in our lives. School teachers are one, and they are amazing...but I think parents and friends are also teachers. Everyone can be a teacher in one way or another. 

So this week, I was thinking about if I am really seeing the potential in those that I teach and those that I talk to. Am I seeing the gem that they can become, or the unpolished Jewel that they are? 

I just want to challenge you all, to find a way that you are teaching people, and to do your best to see their potential. Yes, everyone makes mistakes...but that isn't important. It is what people can become and do and how you can help them get there that is important!

Focus on Christ and Press On

Hello Family and Friends!

So the wind in Wales in the winter is JUST LIKE THE WIND AT HOME. It is pretty much the worst part of being outside. But its ok..I love it here anyways.

MINCEMEAT! I wish you could send that over for Christmas, but by then it would just be gross...Oh how I love mincemeat tarts.

My new companion is Sister Gaffney, she is from England, and she has been out for 15 months...(yep. She only has 3 months left). She is AMAZING though. I already love her, and we get along really well. We had been together for like 30 minutes our first day, and we started to say things in sync which is kind of freaky, but I love her anyways :) She is awesome.

Our investigators are doing ok, this week has been crazy with transfers and seeing Elder Ballard, so we weren't able to see everyone I wanted to but we will this week! I am still feeling well :) The weather is getting colder, and just a LOT windier and wetter. That is the major thing about winter haha. It isn't too cold though. We will probably ride our bikes all winter, Sister Gaffney has never had a biking area her whole mission so we are getting her bike on Wednesday from the zone leaders, so that will be fun for her!

I love the book of Mormon!! IT IS THE BEST. The spirit during it is so strong. I finished it once on my mission so far, and am now in 3 Nephi again - it is amazing how more real the stories get the more you read them, and how much more you get from the scriptures every time. It still amazes me :)

First of all, transfers were this week, and... I STAYED IN RHIWBINA! ️️
Second of all, Sister Lowder left...
And third, my new companion is ENGLISH and her name is Sister Gaffney
and she is AMAZING.

And most importantly, we heard from an apostle of the Lord this week
at a mission conference, and I shook his hand, oh and also I played
the piano in the musical number at this conference. CRAZY

Monday - we went to Caerphilly Castle! IT WAS AMAZING. I will attach
loads of pictures because it was just AMAZING. I loved it. It was huge
and just so...old. I loved it. We then went to the Bernard's for
dinner, they are so sweet and they were going to come teaching with us
but Lisa cancelled so we just ended up finishing weekly planning. That
night (LATE) we got the call that Sister Lowder was leaving to go to
Nottingham...

Tuesday - we met with the Relief Society president to talk about how
we can help work with her more, and then went to go to a lesson (which
got cancelled) and then sister Lowder packed a LOT and I cleaned. A
lot. We then had a lovely last supper with Deb and the Jones family!
It was wonderful. Then we spent the rest of the night getting Sister
Lowder all packed up.

Wednesday - we travelled to take Sister Lowder to the coach...I said
goodbye...and then went with the Cardiff sisters to their area and
visited some people, and talked to LOADS of people on the street. They
have the city in their area so there are people EVERYWHERE. It was
weird for me coming from Rhiwbina. But it was fun and we found some
really cool people who were interested! We then headed back to where
the coach was going to drop off the missionaries coming to the area,
and waited for them. I got my new companion :) we loaded her stuff up
and then went to a DA with the Liassides, so she got to meet them
right off the bat, and then we had ward coordination so she met the
ward mission leader right off the bat, and then we had a lesson with
Paul so she met him right off the bat! We then came back and planned
and unpacked her stuff a tiny bit in the time we had...

Thursday - we taught Lisa :) we hadn't been able to see her for a few
weeks but it was so good to teach her again! She loved the lesson, and
was happy to have us back I think. We also stopped by a LOT of people,
some of whom we had wrong addresses for but that's ok! We had a lovely
conversation with an atheist...and then had dinner at the Winters!
They are such a sweet family. I love them to bits. Sister Gaffney got
to see quite a bit of the area which was wonderful for her, and we had
a lot of fun getting to know eachother while tracting :) I LOVE BEING
A MISSIONARY!

Friday - we went to visit Marilyn...but she was still ill :( poor
thing. She sounded so awful. From there...we went to town to catch the
coach for the long ride to Birmingham. And from there, we caught the
train and then the Sisters there gave us a ride to where we had our
sleepover in Solihull. It was a long day, but it was good!

Saturday - MISSION CONFERENCE WITH ELDER BALLARD!!!!
Also, Elder Christensen of the presidency of the 70 and also Elder
Kearon from the Area presidency!

THIS WAS AMAZING!! Oh my goodness. The musical number (which was
Joseph Smiths First Vision to the tune of Come Thou Fount) went really
well I think. So more on the musical number now there's I can actually
talk about it haha. So we couldn't find any sheet music that we liked
and that worked with the harmony parts really, so we found some that
worked for some of it and then I made up the rest  so it was a bit
scary, but we figured out the arrangement and it was BEAUTIFUL and the
spirit was so strong! At least I felt it, so I hope everyone else did  :)

The rest of the conference...wow. First of all, Elder Ballard is
hilarious. He has the best sense of humour and I didn't really know
that until this conference. And wow. He is also so inspired. I learned
SO much from him about how to be a better missionary. I cannot wait to
apply it all..or at least try, there is so much! I LOVED IT.
From there, we travelled home and finished weekly planning for the week!

Sunday - we had church, which was FABULOUS and I again, just learned
so much. I feel like my whole mission is just me learning and having
"Aha" moments constantly. There is so much to do and improve on, and
learn, it is amazing! We then went to visit a media referral (someone
who asked for the missionaries to come!) but...his address was wrong.
We talked to some people along the way though and it was a wonderful
day :)

Spiritual thought of the day is this thought from Elder Ballard

"when you are having a bad day, go to Gethsemane in your mind."

 He said that as we do this and focus on Christ, we will have the inner
strength we need to press on. I can promise you that Christ is our
Saviour, he loved us and he knows what we need and how to help us
through our trials. He knows this because he has been there, he has
felt it all and he just wants to help us! Always remember that Christ
knows how to help us.
